This parenting gig is full of beauty amidst the chaos (but there is certainly a lot of chaos)! You get your grip (or sort of) on one phase they’re going through, start implementing new routines and strategies then it blows out of the water and they’re into a new phase that they (and you) need support with!
As a mum of a currently three-year-old, I’ve come to realise that adjusting to being a parent is something you just do when they are born but something you do continually as they grow and develop through their ages and stages and phases of life!
That revelation has been quite revolutionary for me and most of all, freeing! I am more able now to recognize that my frustration with a particular behaviour or habit is often a result of me needing to readjust to the new stage and phase she’s going through.
Parenting is a constant process of adjustment! Somehow we need to embrace that!
There’s so much focus on postnatal adjustment (rightly so because wow your world flips on it’s head), but I think there should also be focus on continual parenting adjustment as the child grows. If you’re struggling with your child maybe you’re struggling to adjust to the new age/stage/phase they’re in and that’s okay. Recognise it, learn about the new age/stage/phase if you need to and talk about it. This parenting gig was never meant to be done alone. Remember the saying… it takes a village to raise a child!
